June 1-2: An Austin Salute 2 Prince at Antone’s. It’s not surprising that the first night of this show sold out quickly, but thankfully, organizers have added a second night. (Update, 1 p.m. Friday, May 6: The second show has now sold out as well.) Every musician in Austin has been shaken by the way 2016 has unfolded as a startling season of profound loss, but no local band was more directly impacted by the passing of Prince than Grupo Fantasma. For a period of several years beginning in 2007, the group became an on call back up band for the pop superstar.
“It was just magical,” the group’s former guitarist, Adrian Quesada, said of that period of his life on the day Prince died.
Quesada will rejoin his old crew to honor the eccentric (and hilarious) genius as Grupo Fantasma serves as the house band for a massive tribute show. The band will be joined by keyboard player Michael Ramos and backing vocalists Karla Manzur and Tje Austin.
A veritable who’s who of Austin’s rock and soul musicians including Eve & the Exiles, Nakia, Tameca Jones and Suzanna Choffel will perform.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Clifford Antone Foundation and the SIMS Foundation.
June 3: Nothing Compares 2 U: Austin’s Life Celebration for Prince at the Belmont. Helmed by jazz artist Courtney Santana and friends, this salute to the Purple One also features Terri Thomas Jr., Akina Adderley and Ray Prim. DJ Kay Cali holds down the ones and twos and guests are encouraged to put on their sexiest purple attire and dance away the night under the stars. A portion of proceeds benefit rebuildthedream.com. $16.82. 9 p.m. 305 W. 6th St. Belmontaustin.com
June 4: Sheila E. at the Carver Cultural Center in San Antonio. Sometimes it’s worth a road trip, and the opportunity to catch an intimate show with Prince’s longtime drummer (and, incidentally, Austin musician Alejandro Escovedo’s cousin) might be one of those times. $35. More info.
June 4: Threadgill’s World Headquarters with A Live One, Panic Stricken and Blouses. The local Phish cover band A Live One put together this event which also features Blouses, a new group featuring members of Hard Proof and Mama K and the Shades. The bands request that you wear your finest purple attire. Some $10 early bird tickets available.
June 7: Purify Yourself with Foot Patrol at Hotel Vegas. On the day Prince Rogers Nelson would have turned 58, there’s no better place to celebrate than Hotel Vegas with Foot Patrol. It’s quite possible the groundbreaking funky rock of His Purple Majesty is the only thing Austin’s electro-funk specialists love more than feet. (And they really love feet.) The band will play “Purple Rain” in its entirety. It’s also club owner Jason McNeely’s birthday, so raise a glass to one of Austin’s greatest champions of local bands and pour one out for Prince. 9 p.m. 1500 E. 6th St. texashotelvegas.com
June 10: Body Rock ATX’s annual Prince Birthday Bash. Where better to release your lingering grief? Hip-hop duo Riders in the Storm and DJ Chorizo Funk’s monthly happening is equal parts sweaty dance party and call to spiritual awakening. As such, it’s the best place in Austin to sweat out your sorrows and revel in the enduring Purple Light. Tickets coming soon.
