In the time King George Strait has blessed us with his presence on this earth, he has had 60 No. 1 hits. That fact is all the more impressive knowing he didn’t write many of them; he just knows how to pick ’em. From “The Fireman” to “Give It Away,” the King of Country is one of the most consistent artists in country music. But that’s not all of the man’s accomplishments.
He’s recorded 29 studio albums, and has sold more than 68 million albums in the United States alone.
He has influenced generations of country music talent. He’s starred in his own film, “Pure Country” (the soundtrack for which sold more than 6 million copies) and closed out his final “Cowboy Rides Away” tour with a sold-out show played to 104,793 people.
He’s even on our list of things we love about Texas.
Today, we celebrate another milestone for King George: His 64th birthday.
Even in his retirement, Strait continues to bring us joy. He retired from touring in 2014, but is currently in the middle of a four-show stint in Las Vegas with Kacey Musgraves. His last album, “Cold Beer Conversation,” was released unceremoniously (as is now becoming the trend) in September and quickly shot to No. 1 on the country Billboard chart.
He also recently made a stop at GSD&M to help celebrate Ray Benson’s birthday during SXSW.
To celebrate Strait’s birthday, we put together this selection of some of our favorite songs spanning Strait’s entire career. Kick back, relax, and sing along.
