While Florence Welch and her Machine offered concert goers inspiring performances during their Austin360 Amphitheater appearance and ACL Live taping, one young Austin fan wasn’t able to make it out to the show — so the band brought it straight to her bedside.
15-year-old Karinya Chen had planned on attending the concert with her best friend but wasn’t able to due to her health. The staff at Hospice Austin’s Christopher House reached out to the band, who added one more stop on their tour. The moving 45-minute bedside concert at the health care facility featured hits like “Dog Days Are Over,” “Shake it Out” and a room full of teen backup vocalists, by way of Chen’s friends. At one point Welch comments, seeming surprised, “Such good harmony!”
“My patient’s mom was so nervous- will she really come? Is she here yet? She kept popping out of the room and checking. And Florence came. And her mom burst into tears of joy at the sight of her and Florence gave her a big hug. Florence walked around the corner to the patient’s room — stuffed to the gills with teen friends — and there were shrieks and squeals and so much joyous music and singing and tears and tears and tears of grief and joy and hope and love and utter devastation and somehow simple kindness made everything better.”
