On Thursday, August 18 at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, we’re very excited to present our first Statesman Screens event, Hold Up: The Beyoncé Feminism Sing-Along. We’ll be screening clips from Beyoncé’s incredible visual album “Lemonade” interspersed with discussion from a panel of Austin’s top Bey-ologists. Then we’ll throw down with a fierce and “Flawless” sing-along.

All ticket sales will benefit SafePlace.

Event description:

We’ve been down with Texas-bred cultural sensation Beyoncé Knowles since she was a “Bootylicious” “Survivor” who soundtracked our living room get-downs. These days she’s a Super Bowl show-stealing, alleged Illuminati queen-pin who breaks the internet the way most people break bread. Her stunning visual album “Lemonade,” a celebration of black femininity and a stark examination of infidelity and other forms of betrayal, captures a zeitgeist that feels very 2016.

Statesman Screens has put together a team of Austin’s top Bey-ologists from the worlds of art, media and academia to unpack the hot sauce in ‘Yoncé’s bag (swag). Join us for a “Lemonade” clip screening and panel discussion with Omise’eke Tinsley, University of Texas professor and creator of the “Beyoncé Feminism and Rihanna Womanism” course; Qi Dada Ras, half of the husband/wife hip-hop duo Riders Against the StormFlorinda Bryant, multidisciplinary artist and managing director of Salvage Vanguard Theater; and YouTube star Evelyn Ngugi, a.k.a. Evelyn From the Internets.

Austin American-Statesman music writer Deborah Sengupta Stith will moderate the chat, then “we’ll put them hands high” and sweat it out with a sing-along of hits from Queen Bey’s career. We’ll also have a sequin-centric photo booth and special lemonade cocktails.
