Emo gods American Football announce first album in 17 years

Lo, and on Tuesday, the heavens opened and tears of joy (and sadness) poured down like emotionally complex rain. Illinois band and stuff of emo legend American Football released a new song and announced a forthcoming album.

The long-long-long-long-awaited follow-up to the band’s 1999’s self-titled LP is slated to drop Oct. 21, and it will also be titled “American Football,” which will be very confusing but also who cares.

Listen to the new track, “I’ve Been Lost For So Long,” but consider getting in your car and driving around a dark, lonely neighborhood first.

Though frontman Mike Kinsella has steadily released music through his solo project, Owen, since the band broke up (including a new album earlier this year), new material from American Football would have been unthinkable a year ago. But after a rapturously received reunion tour last year, which included a Fun Fun Fest stop, anything is possible if only you believe hard enough.

Some good news, before the summer ends.
