Watch: Lizzo at ACL Fest: ‘Women need to stick together’

Minneapolis rapper Lizzo won our hearts last week with a Sunday Austin City Limits Festival opener set loaded with so much sass and soul it was one of the best things we saw all week. She performs with her longtime DJ Sophia Eris, plus a pair back-up dancers she calls the big girls. The women are part of her long time crew, dating back to the days when she and Eris were in an all female hip-hop outfit called the Chalice.

“I look up and we’re on Atlantic Records and I have a show on MTV but it feels the exact same as when we were touring in a rental car and playing whenever we can,” she said when we met up for a quick backstage chat.  “The work ethic has remained the same. The opportunities have just changed.”

“I think there’s something really special about when women get together,” she said. “That’s why they try to keep so separated and secured because when we get together we can do amazing things, supernatural things almost.”

With undeniable skill and swagger, Lizzo and her Big Girls are poised to change the hip-hop game. Catch her on the Honda stage at ACL Fest at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday.
