Free Week is coming! Start planning your local music binge

Are you ready for the most wonderful time of the year? No, not Christmas, but Free Week, that glorious 10-day period at the top of each year when clubs throw open their doors and thousands of local music lovers head downtown for a free binge on the best of Austin music. Listings for a mess of Free Week shows came out this week.

We’re still perusing the rundown to figure out our full schedule, but here are a couple can’t-miss parties:

Sweet Spirit. Erika Rich/For American-Statesman

Wednesday, Jan 4: Sweet Spirit, Moving Panoramas and Crocodile Tears at Barracuda. Sweet Spirit is one of the best pop-rock bands in America right now. Period. They have a new album out this spring and expect them to catapult onto the national stage shortly thereafter. The swirly dream pop of Moving Panoramas makes the spirit of this bill even sweeter.

Friday, Jan. 6: Digital Wild, Darkbird, Calliope Musicals, A. Sinclair at Empire. Digital Wild’s groovy trip-hop is a highlight but this bill is also loaded with quirky indie pop and good old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll.

Friday, Jan. 6: Money Chicha, La Vida Buena, Son de Rey, Kalua at Stubb’s inside. Money Chicha’s “Echo en Mexico”  spins out psychedelic cumbia that’s simultaneously otherworldly and so appropriately Austin, we should go ahead and name it as one of our city’s signature sounds.

Friday, Jan. 13: American Sharks, Riverboat Gamblers, Dream Machine at Barracuda. The annual rowdy rock throw down from these dudes is always an eardrum shattering, body rattling blowout.
