Weekend music picks: Free Week finale, Eric Johnson’s guitar heroics, Hard Proof’s ‘Stinger’

OUR TOP PICKS

Free Week Finale. Perhaps it should be called Free Fortnight? The year-launching tradition winds up what has actually a been two-week run with a handful of shows in Red River Cultural District clubs. Friday’s main attraction is a Barracuda bill featuring Riverboat Gamblers, Peelander Z, Eastside Suicides and City Life at Barracuda; on Saturday, the best bets are Midnight Stroll, Tinnarose, Slomo Drags and Halfways on the indoor stage at Stubb’s, and an extended bill at Empire that includes Ruby & the Reckless and Alesia Lani. Check venue websites for times and addresses. — P.B.

Friday-Saturday: Jim Lauderdale at Continental Club. Based in Nashville and long renowned as an authority on Americana music — so much so that he’s been the emcee of the Americana Music Awards for more than a decade — Lauderdale has covered a lot of ground over more than two dozen albums, from honky-tonk to bluegrass to collaborations with the Grateful Dead’s Robert Hunter. His latest, “This Changes Everything,” was recorded in Austin at Arlyn Studios, with a band including pianist Floyd Domino, bassist Kevin Smith and drummer Tom Lewis. Some of them will be backing Lauderdale for this two-night stand $20. 8 p.m. 1315 S. Congress Ave. continentalclub.com. — P.B.

Friday: Hard Proof record release at Antone’s. Austin’s instrumental powerhouse mixes the Afrobeat sounds pioneered by Nigerian artist Fela Kuti with jazz and hard funk. They pack a wallop of sound and a plethora of booty-moving polyrhythms. The band celebrates the release of a new full-length “Stinger,”produced by Chris “Frenchie” Smith. A portion of proceeds from ticket and merch sales will be donated to social justice nonprofits including the ACLU and Equality Texas. Psych-soul trio Los Coast opens. $10-$12. 9 p.m. doors. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com — D.S.S.

Sunday: Eric Johnson at Paramount Theatre. Long considered by many to be Austin’s premier electric guitarist — even in the 1980s when he and Stevie Ray Vaughan were the city’s twin-engine burners of prog-rock and blues — Johnson has taken an intriguing turn toward acoustic guitar and piano on his new album “EJ,” due in early October. He’ll play both guitar and keyboards in this solo performance at the century-old downtown landmark. (Rescheduled from Nov. 19; tickets to that show will be honored for this one.) $20-$45. 8 p.m. 713 Congress Avenue. austintheatre.org. — P.B.

Sunday: KeyzStreet Sundays at Stay Gold. Local R&B and hip-hop label KeyzStreet brings the holiday weekend heat as their month-long Sunday night residency at the shabby chic Eastside lounge continues. The KeyzStreet band lays the smooth backing grooves as smoldering singer Alessia Lani performs and fellow bedroom crooner Jake Lloyd premieres his new single “Ms. Compton.” No cover. 10 p.m. 1910 E. Cesar Chavez St. staygoldaustin.com — D.S.S.
