This week’s music picks: Karla Bonoff, Japandroids, Sara Watkins and more

Wednesday: Karla Bonoff at One World Theatre. Though new material from the Southern California singer-songwriter hasn’t arrived for a long time, it’s heartening that she has continued to tour, even after the 2010 death of her longtime collaborator and guitarist Kenny Edwards. Several of Linda Ronstadt’s best-known songs came from Bonoff’s pen, and hearing them directly from the songwriter, who generally plays both piano and acoustic guitar at her live shows, is something special. $20-$98. 8 p.m. 7701 Bee Caves Blvd. — P.B.

Japandroids play a free in-store at Waterloo Records on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Rodolfo Gonzalez/American-Statesman 2013

Japandroids play a free in-store at Waterloo Records on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Rodolfo Gonzalez/American-Statesman 2013

Wednesday: Japandroids at Waterloo Records. Back on the road after a three-year hiatus, the Vancouver rock duo swiftly sold out an intimate gig inside at the Mohawk on Tuesday night. But you can catch them playing songs from their new release “Near to the Wild Heart of Life” at a free Waterloo in-store performance. 5 p.m. 600A N. Lamar Blvd. — D.S.S.

Thursday: Sara Watkins at Antone’s. A fiddle prodigy since her preteen years, Watkins accomplished more with stratospheric string band Nickel Creek than most instrumentalists do in a lifetime. Nickel Creek still occasionally reunites, but the past decade has been more about solo explorations and other collaborations for the trio’s members. Watkins is flying high off last year’s release of “Young in All the Wrong Ways.” It’s an ironic title, for while Watkins remains agelessly babyfaced, her music has matured considerably, as she’s proving to be a songwriter with hard-won lyrical wisdom and a musical range that reaches well beyond her bluegrass roots. Liz Longley opens. $20-$23. 8 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. — P.B.
