It seems like each year the big names playing South by Southwest Music Festival turn up later and later, but at this point in the year, with the fest less than two months away, we’re able to look at release and tour schedules and start making educated guesses. This year’s SXSW music festival takes place from March 13-19 and here are six artists that might make it to town.
Also worth noting: If you don’t want to shell out for a badge or wristband, but still want to participate in the fest, the final volunteer call is Saturday.
Ryan Adams: At last year’s fest, the singer-songwriter did the ballroom blitz with the Avett Brothers. This year he has a new album “Prisoner,” his first non-Taylor Swift-related release since 2014, out on February 17 and a tour that drops him off in NOLA on March 14.
Avett Brothers: Speaking of the Avett Brothers, there’s a documentary on the band, “May It Last,” screening at the SXSW Film Festival and they have a break in their tour between March 12-23.
Depeche Mode: The British new wave innovators have a new album, “Spirit,” out March 17 and a tour that doesn’t start til May. Not a whole lot to go on, but they released the single “Revolution” last week, and they have played the fest before.
Big Sean: The rapper who came to town for the MTV Woodies in 2015 and did a featured interivew, but didn’t play an official showcase, has a new album “I Decided” that dropped last week. His tour kicks off March 17 in Houston.
Sleigh Bells: The candy-core duo released “Jessica Rabbit” in November. Following a March 11 Dallas show, their tour goes on break til March 17.
The Shins: The indie rock outfit has a new album, “Heartworms,” out March 10 and a break in their tour between March 7 and March 28.
