Sun Radio a surprise winner at Austin Music Industry Awards

By a margin that the presenters said was “less than 10 votes,” Americana outlet Sun Radio won Best Radio Station on Monday night at the Austin Music Industry Awards, ending an extended reign by University of Texas-affiliated stations KUT/KUTX.

That announcement was among the high points of a private ceremony held at the Palm Door on Sixth. It’s the third year that the industry awards have been separated out from the main Austin Music Awards show, which takes place on Sunday, March 12, at ACL Live.

Another change came in the categories of Best Live Music Venue, Best Music Venue to Play and Best Club Sound. After the recent shuttering of Strange Brew, which had won those categories the past two years, this time the Saxon Pub swept all three.

The evening concluded with author and musician Jesse Sublett presenting a music industry Hall of Fame award to Eddie Wilson, whose legacy in Austin includes opening the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters in the 1970s and keeping the city’s two Threadgill’s restaurant and music destinations running for decades.

Voting was by public ballot in the Austin Chronicle. Here’s the full list of this year’s winners:
