Austin’s saddest puppet band, Fragile Rock, celebrates NPR debut Friday

Local comedian (and former Statesman employee) Brently Heilbron, leads Fragile Rock, an emo puppet band known for their morose but heartfelt songs. His puppets, constructed by local actor Shaun Branigan, exist in a universe far removed from the “Sunny Days” of “Sesame Street,” but they’re beginning to gain a national audience.

Earlier this year, Heilbron’s troupe was invited to record a Tiny Desk Concert performance for National Public Radio. Tomorrow, the crew celebrates the spot with a free viewing party at the Highball. The happy hour party kicks off at 5 p.m. with the viewing scheduled for 5:45.

Here’s a video of his crestfallen felt friends moping the streets of Austin in 2015.
