Travis County could see large to very large hail Thursday evening, NWS says

Some severe weather could be headed to the Austin area Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Counties southwest and northwest of Austin and parts of western Travis County could see the brunt of the effects, with meteorologists predicting large to very large hail and some secondary damaging winds.

What time is severe weather possible in Austin?

The National Weather Service believes the storms will be isolated to scattered, with not all areas receiving rainfall. The weather could start as early as 5 p.m. Thursday, but it is more likely to start at 7 p.m. and cease by midnight.

"If there is a storm (in Austin), it's probably likely to be producing hail, but it looks like the better chances are going to be in the Hill Country," Emily Heller, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in New Braunfels, said.

What's the weather in Austin this weekend?

Heavier rainfall is likely to start on Saturday afternoon and could continue until sunrise on Sunday, Heller said. The NWS is anticipating about 1.5 inches total in the Austin area, with a chance for isolated street flooding. Highs on Sunday will drop into the mid-60s, and conditions will be dry.
